Lebanon files complaint to UN over alleged Israeli spy network

Beirut: Lebanon has filed a complaint to the United Nations accusing Israel of planting spy networks in the country.

Lebanon's Foreign Ministry, which drew up the complaint, said Thursday the letter was sent overnight to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Over the past two years, Lebanese authorities have detained more than 100 people suspected of spying for Israel. Most of the suspects allegedly tried to infiltrate or get information on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

About 50 people have been charged with spying for the Jewish state. In Israel, several people have been captured for allegedly giving information to Hezbollah.

Israeli and Hezbollah fought a 34-day war in 2006.
