Cairo: Egyptian police detained at least 41 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood on Sunday ahead of local council elections.

The Islamist movement said the arrests are an attempt to disrupt its plans for the elections.

Some of the 41 men arrested at their homes were planning to stand as candidates in the elections in April, a security source said.

The detentions bring to about 440 the number of Muslim Brotherhood members in custody, most of them detained without charge.
