Tehran: A strong earthquake hit a province in northwestern Iran on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the 5.3 magnitude earthquake in Zanzan province.
The official Irna news agency reported that frightened people rushed outside to open areas.
Telephone communications were disrupted in some areas.
