Baghdad: A car bomb targeting a passing US military convoy in western Baghdad killed six civilians and wounded more than a dozen, police and an Interior Ministry source said.

The blast went off near a popular restaurant in the Mansour district, some 500 metres from an Iraqi army checkpoint, sources said. It set off several cars on fire.

Iraqi forces cordoned off the area in western Baghdad. Police had no further details on the explosion but did say the death toll could rise.

Sunni insurgents fighting the Shiite-led government in Baghdad frequently attack US and Iraqi military forces.
