Dubai: Saudi Arabia is bracing for several days of heavy rainfall and dust storms across its southern regions starting Sunday, according to the National Center for Meteorology.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Hussein Al Qahtani, the centre’s official spokesperson, said the downpours will affect the regions of Mecca, Al Baha, Asir, Najran, and Jazan — with mountainous areas expected to see the most intense activity.

Al Qahtani added that the centre is coordinating with relevant authorities to manage the situation and that emergency protocols are being activated in response to the forecast.

The daily weather bulletin also warned of active winds stirring dust and sand in several areas, including Najran, Riyadh, Medina, and Mecca, potentially reducing visibility to near zero along coastal roads — particularly the route linking Jazan. Temperatures are forecast to remain hot to extremely hot in the Eastern Province.

Over the Red Sea, surface winds will shift from northwesterly to southwesterly in the northern and central parts, reaching speeds of 10–25 km/h. In the southern Red Sea, winds may strengthen up to 45 km/h, generating waves between 1–2 metres. Sea conditions will range from light to moderate depending on location.

In the Arabian Gulf, winds will vary from southeasterly to northeasterly throughout the day, with speeds of 10–30 km/h and wave heights of 0.5 to 1 metre. Overall, conditions are expected to remain calm at sea.

The National Center for Meteorology has urged residents and travellers in affected areas to stay alert, follow official updates, and adhere to safety instructions issued by local authorities.
