This Saudi Arabian landmark blends heritage with its prime Abha Valley location
Dubai: Al Muftaha District, a cultural and historical landmark in Abha, Saudi Arabia, seamlessly blends heritage with its prime location along Abha Valley. This Ramadan, it has transformed into a vibrant hub, drawing visitors for a unique mix of recreational, artistic, and heritage-focused experiences.
Organised by the Asir Development Authority’s Tourism Destinations Sector, the district’s Ramadan festivities offer diverse activities. Families, both local and visiting, explore the Art Village — established 35 years ago — featuring exhibitions and artistic displays celebrating the region’s creativity.
A key attraction is Al Muftaha’s modern theatre, accommodating over 3,500 people with advanced audiovisual technology. The district also hosts Souq Al Thulatha (Tuesday Market), one of Asir’s oldest traditional souqs, with pedestrian-friendly walkways and open-air stalls selling handicrafts and local goods.
Al Muftaha’s architecture preserves Abha’s traditions, with thick walls, small windows, and "raqf" plaster coatings protecting mud walls from rain and heat. Several historic palaces add to the district's timeless charm.
Historically, Al Muftaha was a sword-making hub. Craftsmen sourced iron-rich rocks from the Al Soudah Mountains, forging swords, daggers, and agricultural tools, preserving a vital aspect of local heritage.
