Muscat: An Indian resident has been sentenced to two years in prison and permanent deportation for reckless driving that caused a fatal accident, according to the Public Prosecution.

The crash, which occurred recently on the Liwa highway, resulted in four deaths and 15 injuries.

The Liwa Primary Court found the defendant, Mohamad Faras, guilty of driving at high speed in the wrong direction on a divided road, endangering lives and property.

Faras received a two-year prison sentence for reckless driving and an additional three-month sentence for driving against traffic, with the longer sentence taking precedence.

The court also revoked his driving licence for one year and ordered his lifelong deportation after serving his jail term. He was also required to pay legal expenses.

“This case is a stark reminder of the severe consequences of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic laws for public safety," the Public Prosecution stated, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.
