Sinn Fein chief's brother turns himself in over claims of abusing daughter

Dublin: A brother of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has turned himself in to Irish police over charges that he sexually assaulted his daughter.

The scandal has embarrassed Sinn Fein, the major Irish nationalist party in Northern Ireland, and raised new questions about its commitment to law and order.

Liam Adams fled Belfast after being charged in November 2008 with 23 counts of abusing his daughter for eight years.

The daughter went public with her anger at Sinn Fein's inaction Thursday. Gerry Adams responded by demanding that his brother come out of hiding - and admitting he'd known about his abuse since 1987.
