London: Portugal police on Saturday acknowledged to British media for the first time that missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann may be dead.

Madeleine's parents were still waiting for news about their daughter, who has been missing for the 100th day on Saturday.

Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa told BBC that new evidence had given "intensity" to the possibility that she was killed.

He was referring to suspected traces of blood found inside the apartment room where Madeleine was sleeping.

In southern Portugal, Gerry and Kate McCann said prayers at a mass in the holiday resort of Praia da Luz to mark 100 days without their daughter.

The McCanns also launched "Don't You Forget about Me", a channel on YouTube to help trace missing children, to mark 100 days without their daughter.

Madeleine disappeared on May 3 during a holiday with her parents at the Mark Warner Ocean Club holiday resort in Portugal.
