Nestled by the Tatras, Zakopane has become a surprising summer hotspot for Gulf tourists

A rainy day in Zakopane might not thrill most tourists—but for visitors from the Gulf, it’s a welcome break from 50°C heat. Nestled at the base of the Tatras, Poland’s highest mountain range, the alpine-style town of Zakopane has become an unexpected summer hotspot for tourists from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Known for skiing in winter and hiking in summer, Zakopane is now buzzing with Gulf tourists enjoying cooler temperatures, scenic views, and a warm welcome. “We’ve completely taken over the place,” laughed Saudi photographer Fahad Alayyash as he admired the mountain view from Gubałówka hill.

Thanks to increased flights—up to seven daily to nearby Krakow—tourist numbers from the Gulf have soared, growing 66% last year. Social media has fueled the boom, with Arab influencers praising Zakopane for its natural beauty anf safety.

“I saw on Twitter that it’s safe and welcoming to all religions, so I came,” said Abdullah Alotaibi, a Kuwaiti ship captain. Saudi professor Manal Alanazy added, “When it’s dark, I still feel safe. It feels like home.”

Local businesses have quickly adapted. Many offer halal menus and Arabic signage, and hotels report that Arab guests now make up nearly a third of their summer bookings. City officials say the only challenge is adjusting to different driving habits. Even so, Zakopane’s charm—and its perfect weather—continue to win over Gulf visitors, rain or shine.
