Dubai: A massive storm surge from Typhoon Fung‑wong has forced the banks of the Chico River in Cagayan province to collapse, sweeping away homes and displacing thousands as the archipelago reels from the back-to-back arrival of fierce typhoons. The system hurled across the Philippines' eastern seaboard with destructive winds and rain, killing at least five people and forcing more than a million to evacuate.
Dams and flood‐retaining structures were overwhelmed as saturated hillsides gave way to mudslides, particularly in northern Luzon. The disaster follows closely on the heels of Typhoon Kalmaegi — which killed 224 + people — compounding the Philippines’ recovery and spotlighting the risks posed by escalating storm intensity in the region. Rural communities now face weeks of power and water outages, impassable roads and isolation as the national disaster response ramps up.
