Bangkok: At least 62 people were wounded when two almost simultaneous explosions struck Muslim southern Thailand on Tuesday, police said.

The first explosion, a car bomb, took place at a fruit market and appeared to target an open-air meeting of village heads in Narathiwat.

The second explosion hit minutes later at a teashop 100 metres away, police said.

Violence is rife in southern Thailand and 3,000 people have been killed in a five-year uprising.
