Bangkok: At least nine people were killed when a race car jumped a barrier and crashed into a crowd of spectators in Thailand, police said on Sunday.

Four others were seriously injured in the country's worst racing accident in years, which took place at the Bangkok Drag Avenue in the suburb of Pathum Thani on Saturday night, police Lieutenant Colonel Wanchai Chengaree said.

"The car lost control and hit the concrete barrier around the track. It flew over and landed on the fans," Wanchai said, adding that the driver of the car survived the crash.

The dead were all men aged between 16 and 41, he said.
