Manila: Taguig, a Manila suburb and a thriving urban centre along the shore of Laguna de Bay, could well end up as the city with most number of centenarians if records of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) are correct.

The poll body lists 691 voters aged 100 and above. But even the city's chief executive Mayor Dante Tiñga doubts this record.

Tiñga called on the Comelec to investigate and immediately take action on the registration and inclusion of more than 600 centenarians in the city's official voters' lists.

Tiñga's request followed an expose by the Institute of Political and Electoral Reform (IPER) president Etta Rosales that revealed 691 centennial voters were registered and active in Taguig's Comelec official record.

Rosales said that aside from the huge number of centenarian voters, they also noted other "curious" anomalies in the list.

This includes findings that of the 691 voters with ages 100 and above, 621 were born on January 1, 1901.

Another interesting case involved voter Rosalyn Ricafort Galvez, who was listed as "127" years of age.

If Comelec records are true, then Galvez could be the oldest living person in the world.

Following the expose by IPER, Comelec officials explained that the anomaly might be due to the computer default.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said there was a possibility that registrants who failed to write down their actual birth dates were automatically registered by the computer under the default date of January 1, 1901.
