Man slices organ after 'hearing voices'

Manila: A drunk 31-year-old man from the central Philippine island of Iloilo has sliced off his sex organ with a machete after "hearing voices" from unseen persons who ordered him to do it, hospital officials said yesterday.

Attending doctors of Western Visayas Medical Centre were trying their best to re-attach the sex organ of Romeo Consumo from Calinog town in Iloilo who sliced off his penis, including his scrotum, with a long knife which is used for cutting grass.

Consumo remains at the hospital and is waiting for an operation to restore his sex organ.

He told hospital officials that he cut off his organ on Thursday after having a drinking session with his friends.

Consumo left his friends, went home to get the machete, locked himself in his room and cut his sex organ. He allegedly stayed for several minutes inside the house before he threw his sex organ into the waste can.

After hearing Consumo's shouts, his neighbours went to his house and discovered what he had done. He was immediately taken to the hospital.

Consumo could not explain to his family and to the doctors why he did it.

He only said that there were "unseen" persons who were disturbing him and telling him to listen to them. Sources said Consumo had suffered a nervous breakdown. Police said he was apparently temporarily out of his mind when he cut his organ.
