UN to begin Benazir Bhutto death probe from July 1

Dubai: The United Nations' Commission of Inquiry will commence its six-month mandate into the facts and circumstances of the assassination of former the Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from July 1.

In a letter to the Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said the UN was "committed to assisting Pakistan by determining the facts and circumstances of Benazir Bhutto's death".

The Commission will be composed of the permanent representative of Chile, Ambassador Heraldo Muñoz, as the head of the Commission; Marzuki Darusman of Indonesia; and Peter Fitzgerald of Ireland.

Ban said the anniversary of the birth of former Prime Minister Bhutto on Sunday was a reminder of the tragic loss suffered by her family and the Pakistani people.
