Islambad: The death toll in the bombing at an opposition party rally in Pakistan has risen to 27, according to media reports on Sunday.

More than 50 people were also wounded in the attack in the town of Charsada in Peshawar province on Saturday.

Television footage from the blast site showed the meeting hall littered with bloodstained clothes, police caps and overturned chairs.

Local party leader Afrasiab Khattak was addressing the rally at the time but told Dawn television he was unhurt.

Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber who was "very close to the stage" where party officials were assembled.
