Maldives president concedes to opposition candidate

Male: The president of Maldives on Wednesday said he would accept defeat to a opposition candidate, bringing an end to his thirty-year rule.

Speaking to state-run Voice of Maldives radio, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom said: "Beloved citizens of the Maldives, I accept the results of the Oct. 28 runoff election and respectfully congratulate Mohamed Nasheed and his party."
