Indonesian police arrest 28 Afghan migrants en route to Australia

Jakarta: Indonesian police say they have arrested 28 illegal Afghan migrants on their way to Australia.

Police chief Muji Supriyadi said the men were seized as they were eating breakfast at a ferry crossing 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of capital.

They were apparently heading to Jakarta to get documents needed to continue their journey.

Indonesia is often used as transit point for illegal migrants from war-torn countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. Many are on their way to Australia, cramming into tiny boats that are often detained or turned back by authorities.

Media reports say at least 150 illegal migrants have been arrested in Indonesia since January.

Supriyadi said the migrants detained Tuesday were being held in an immigration detention house for questioning.
