Woman commits suicide by fire outside Hyderabad police station

Hyderabad: A woman who was being blackmailed committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in front of a police station in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Twenty-five-year-old Sabita took the extreme step outside Boenpally police station in the morning. Policemen on duty tried to douse the fire using a blanket but she had been seriously burned. She was taken to Gandhi hospital where she succumbed to her injuries later in the day, police inspector Vijay Kumar said.

Sabita’s family members alleged that she was being blackmailed by a man called Venkatesh, who had taken a video of her bathing in her house in Annanagar. When in spite of complaining to the authorities, Sabita did not see any resolution, she took the step.

Sabita was married and had two daughters.

An investigation is under way.
