Lucknow: Three female foetuses were found in a dustbin outside a private nursing home in Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh.

A local resident who saw the dead foetuses in the bin near the Baba Sahil Nursing Home informed the police.

Crowds who gathered outside the nursing home shouted slogans against Dr Ahmad Hasan, owner of the nursing home and demanded its closure.

The National Commission for Women has asked the state government to submit a detailed report on the incident.

The police, meanwhile, seized the foetuses and ordered a search of the nursing home.

Two employees have been arrested but the owner managed to escape before the police arrived on the scene.

Umar, an untrained paramedical staff with the nursing home, admitted before the police that more than half a dozen abortion cases were being handled by the nursing home in a day.

Wasim, a local resident, later said the nursing home was known to carry out illegal abortions and used to dump foetuses in the backyard.

"On several occasions, we accosted Dr Hasan and warned him of action but he would apologise profusely and promise not to indulge in illegal activities in future. We are fed up with this nursing home which dumps all the hospital waste and the foetuses on the road. We will not allow the nursing home to function now," he said.

Other residents said the nursing home had been known to carry out illegal abortions for quite some time but no action had been taken though the matter was brought to the notice of the local administration.

The chief medical officer of Rampur, meanwhile, said Dr Hasan was not a registered medical practitioner and neither was his nursing home registered with the authorities concerned.
