Lucknow: Call it the new face of the Uttar Pradesh police or just a case of a kind heart beating beneath the tough khaki but the Meerut police is actually going out of its way to bring two lovers together.
Nishu, 19, was caught stealing a mobile phone on Wednesday and was brought to the Brahmapuri police station. She told police she was desperate to meet Amit, her fiancé, and decided to commit a petty crime so she could also land up in jail and meet him.
"I don't want the mobile I just want to meet Amit," she said.
Nishu and Amit were engaged to be married but two months ago, Amit was implicated in a murder case and was sent to jail. Nishu's parents decided to call off the engagement and started looking for another groom for their daughter. Nishu, however, was determined to marry Amit.
The police then decided to intervene in the matter. "We have decided not to register a criminal case against the girl because she has not committed any crime. We understand her problem and we have decided to convene a meeting between the two families to resolve the issue. Interestingly, Amit is equally determined to marry Nishu and Amit's parents are also willing to accept Nishu as their daughter-in-law," a police officer said.
