New Delhi: Amid the tension in prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over missing student Najeeb Ahmad, a bag with pistol and cartridges was found inside the campus on Monday.

“One countrymade pistol along with seven cartridges was found in a black bag inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University premises. The bag was found around 50 metres from the north gate of JNU campus by one of the guards deployed there,” the police sources informed Gulf News.

A case has been registered against unknown persons under the Arms Act.

“While patrolling last night, a University security guard found an abandoned bag. On opening it, he found that it contained some arms and ammunitions and a screw driver. The JNU security control room then alerted the police,” a JNU teacher said on condition of anonymity.

Police sources believe there may not be a link between the discovery of bag and the case of missing student Ahmad but nothing could be “definitely ruled out.”

President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday sought a detailed report from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Ahmad’s whereabouts.

Earlier, Mukherjee had assured that he will seek a report from the Ministry of Home Affairs on the issue after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met him on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has launched a massive manhunt to trace Ahmad. Delhi has been witnessing a series of agitations over the issue.

On Sunday, Delhi Police detained around 200 JNU students besides Ahmad’s mother and sister for protesting at India Gate. The picture of police dragging away Ahmad’s mother Fatima Ahmad has been widely shared on social media since yesterday.

She was protesting the failure of authorities to trace her son.

Ahmad, a student of School of Biotechnology and a resident of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, has been missing from the campus since October 15.

He went missing after getting into an altercation with members of Bharatiya Janata Party-backed students’ union — Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). There has been no information about Ahmad’s whereabouts so far.
