Air force jets pound Tiger targets

Colombo: Sri Lankan air force jets and helicopters on Saturday bombed a series of rebel targets in the north and northeast as a small bomb explosion on a busy street in the national capital wounded three people, a military spokesman said.

The Sri Lankan Army pressed deeper into Tamil Tiger territory a day after capturing Kilinochchi, the rebels' de facto capital.

The fall of Kilinochchi has squeezed the rebels into 1,605 square kilometres they still hold in the northeast. The rebel-affiliated TamilNet website said the Tamil Tigers had moved their headquarters before the town fell.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said the target of the bomb planted under a car in Colombo was unknown but it was intended to create panic.

On Friday, a suspected rebel suicide attacker blew himself up near the air force headquarters in the heart of Colombo, killing three airmen and wounding 37 other people.

Capturing rebels is not as important as solving the general issue of rebels.
