Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the guest of honour at Wednesday's opening day of the Dhs. 200,000 Third UAE National Backgammon Championship, played an exhibition match.

Sheikh Hazza played against Jordan's Adnan Asad at the Abu Dhabi Golf and Equestrian Club auditorium on a day when defending champion Lewis Zako was on target.

The tournament is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Hazza, who is the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Club, organisers of the event.

Meanwhile, Lewis Zako, who was upset in the Ramadan tournament, seems to be well on way to a good result in the national championship.

Zako moved into the third round and set up a clash with Emad El Deen. Earlier, after a first round bye, the favourite from Iraq defeated Ahmed Younus in a second round match.

Other players to advance along with Zako are Tariq Moafaq, Tariq Moaward, Nicolas C., Adil Sinjaki, Mathias Kramer and Abdul Khader.

Over 100 players entered in the championship which has Dh80,000 as first prize while the runner-up will get Dh60,000. Third and fourth place players will get Dh40,000 and Dh20,000 respectively.

Earlier in the evening, Mohammed bin Thaloob, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Club (ADSC) thanked Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan for supporting the championship. "We are very encouraged by the response to the national championship," added Bin Thaloob, whose ADSC also organises an international and Ramadan Backgammon tournament.

The inaugural was also attended by Naseer Tammemi, Manager of Abu Dhabi Health and Fitness Club.

The final will be played today at the Abu Dhabi Golf and Equestrian Club Auditorium.
