Sharjah: Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority has announced that it will start the necessary maintenance work on four units of Al Layyah desalination water plants, which will require the main water supply line to be cut starting November 28 until December 3.

Essam Al Mulla, director general of the Authority confirmed that the maintenance of the four units will cause the plant’s water production to be decreased by 10 per cent due to the shutting down of the main line.

He also explained that as a result of the necessary work, areas such as Al Layyah, Al Khan, and Al Majaz will experience a reduction in the water flow.

Al Mulla also stressed that these areas will not completely lose water supply, and highlighted that the works are necessary to ensure the functioning of the units.

Sharjah residents have therefore been urged to minimise their water consumption in the next week.

Water disconnection notices have also been sent to buildings in the affected areas informing residents that the water supply will be affected for next six days.

Sewa has chosen to carry out the maintenance works during the winter months of the year as overall consumption levels are generally lower.

The UAE faces growing challenges with water usage, 24 times larger than the total annual renewable water resources of the emirates.
