Motorists and visitors to the emirate during Eid Al Adha holidays have been urged to follow traffic rules and drive within the speed limit.

The appeal was made by Brig. Saeed Ali Hamad Al Haferi, General Director of Fujairah Police Department. He asked motorists to be especially careful at dangerous diversions made for maintenance work on the Sharjah-Fujairah highway in Al Dhaid.

He said: "People flock to Fujairah during the Eid holidays. They should drive carefully and try not to overtake other vehicles at diversions made to maintain roads in Al Dhaid and stretches between Al Dhaid and Fujairah city," said Brig. Al Haferi.

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing is still carrying out maintenance work on the highway between Sharjah and Fujairah.

"Diversions on the Sharjah-Fujairah road have claimed several lives of motorists who violated rules. We urge all motorists using this road, whether going to Sharjah or coming to visit Fujairah, to slow down and be patient while getting past these diversions," he added.

Brig. Al Haferi said a large number of traffic police patrols will be deployed on highways, arterial roads leading to the mountainous places, historical areas along the East Coast and tourists attractions.

"Our traffic policemen have been asked to help motorists and visitors and make them aware of dangerous roads or spots."

Fujairah Civil Defence personnel are also on full alert. "A team from Civil Defence has visited supermarkets and other places where people gather and checked firefighting equipment and safety arrangements," said a source from the Fujairah Civil Defence Department.

He also urged residents, especially housewives and housemaids, to take maximum care while cooking during Eid. They must keep fire extinguishers handy.

He also appealed to parents to watch over children while at play in parks and prevent them from buying fireworks and other dangerous toys which are usually sold during Eid.

The casualty and emergency section at Fujairah and Dibba Al Fujairah Hospitals have also geared up to cope with emergencies.

"Extra doctors and nurses will be on duty for the Eid holidays to treat people involved in traffic accidents or mishaps which increase during long vacations," said a source from the Fujairah Hospital.

A special cultural and music festival has been arranged by the Fujairah Municipality at Ain Madhab Spring Park, Fujairah Heritage Village and at the celebration square in front of Madhab Palace.

The programme will include cultural shows to be performed by the Fujairah Folklore Arts Association and other local and Arabic singers.

A team of veterinarians from the municipality was also sent to the Fujairah livestock market to check animals sold to the public for slaughter. They will also examine meat in the abattoir.
