UAE federation timeline

Though a young nation compared to other countries in the region and elsewhere, the UAE’s achievements in various fields have proven that the country has a farsighted and visionary leadership with the perseverance to build a brighter future for generations to come.

Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan was first appointed as the Ruler’s Representative in Abu Dhabi’s Eastern Region from 1946-1966.

On August 6, 1966 he was unanimously chosen by the Al Nahyan Family as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

In early 1968, Britain announced its will to withdraw from the Arabia Gulf region by end of 1971.

In 1970, Iran claimed Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Mousa Islands. In 1971, Iran occupied the three islands.

On December 2, 1971, the UAE federation was formed and Shaikh Zayed was announced president of the country.

In 1971, the UAE joined the Arab League.

Since 1971, the UAE started calling on the international community to solve the issue of the three islands peacefully.

On February 10, 1972, Ras Al Khaimah joined the Federation.

In 1976, the UAE adopted a centralised policy over defence, intelligence services, immigration, public security and border control.

In 1996, the UAE adopted a permanent constitution.
