Sharjah/Ras Al Khaimah: In separate incidents in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah two men were found dead, hanging from ceiling fans in their accommodation on Wednesday.

Police suspect both the cases to be suicides, based on preliminary information, although investigations are still ongoing.

In Sharjah, the body of a 34-year-old Indian man was found hanging, tied to the fan by a piece of cloth, a Sharjah Police source told Gulf News.

The incident happened around 6.15pm, in the Sajja area, close to the Sajja police station.

Shahid Basheer, 24, who had been working in a studio in Ras Al Khaimah as an album designer and binder for the past three years, was also found hanging at his accommodation in the Al Khuzam area.

“His roommates told the police that they tried to lift his body when they found him, in an attempt to save his life, but he was already dead,” a Ras Al Khaimah police official said.

He added that the officials took fingerprints and other details from the scene to investigate, but have not so far found any criminal act behind the death.

“He is reported to have been suffering from depression due to psychological and social problems for some time, which might have prompted him to end his life,” the official said.

Basheer hails from Trichur in Kerala and is unmarried.

“He returned from work around 1.15pm, while I was cooking. He asked about lunch and asked me not to go to the room for a while as he wanted to speak to his parents privately,” Sudheer, Basheer’s roommate and colleague, recollected.

He did so and finally went to the room around 2.30pm.

But the room was locked and when Basheer did not respond, Sudheer peeped through the keyhole and saw Basheer’s hand motionless. In the meantime, other flatmates had also arrived and they saw the body hanging through the room’s window.

“I cannot think of any reason, he seemed normal and happy.”

According to the police, the number of suicides involving workers has been on the rise recently.

On Wednesday, Gulf News reported two separate suicides in Sharjah — a 29-year-old Iranian man who hung himself on Monday and a 26-year-old Abyssian maid who was found dead by her sponsor on Tuesday.

The official warned that committing suicide is a criminal act, in addition to being against religious teachings.

He urged the public to patient and to seek advice from religious scholars when they are in distress.
