Trucker could have killed youth

Dubai: A truck driver's lack of consideration for road users could have claimed the life of a young Emirati.

The Emirati crashed into the truck which entered the road without making sure it was clear. T.M., 22, a government employee, escaped with minor injuries.

He recalled the accident that took place in July on Al Mafraq Road in Abu Dhabi.

"I was coming back to Dubai from Al Mafraq Road, which has two lanes on both sides. I saw a truck parked on the side of the road and wanted to make a U-turn. I flashed my car lights at the truck to avoid it entering the road," T.M. said.

He said despite the flashing, the truck entered the road and T.M. could not avoid crashing into it.

"The crash was very strong and I thank God that I was wearing a seatbelt, otherwise I would have been thrown out of the car due to the strong impact of the crash," T.M. said.

He sustained injuries to his nose and gums, as the airbags did not work. However, he remained conscious until an ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital.

"The injury still hurts me and sometimes prevents me from doing certain activities," T.M. said.

He said he believes that the increase in heavy trucks has contributed to traffic accidents.

"We understand the country's need for these trucks for construction and development projects. However, I think there should be more police control over truck drivers. Almost every day, I see an accident that involves heavy trucks," T.M. said.

He said there should be more regulations to control heavy vehicles.
