The issuance of six-digit car number plates has been stopped by Ras Al Khaimah Traffic and Licensing Department.

A senior officer said the department has already got rid of most car number plates with six digits.

The move follows an order from the higher authorities.

The Ras Al Khaimah Traffic and Licensing Department started to issue six-digit number plates in the middle of 2003.

Motorists did not prefer six-digit number plates since they believed that it could create problem in other emirates.

According to many motorists, the numbers were not caught by radars and caused problems.

The officer said the suspension of the six-digit number plates had nothing to do with the radars. "If that was the case, the department would have instructed the removal of the number plates long back."

The officer said those who have six-digit number plates on their cars would not face any problems in Ras Al Khaimah or outside and would be changed during registration automatically.

Dismissing rumours that the radars do not catch the six-digit number plates, the officer said it was just a wild belief which is not substantiated by any valid reason.
