Sharjah: A new road, dedicated to trucks in the Al Dhaid area, is expected to open next month in order to reduce traffic congestions in Sharjah, a senior official said on Thursday.
"All the trucks will be diverted to the new road once it is open and they will not be allowed to ply within the city.
"Through this, we aim to minimise the traffic, especially on Emirates Road and the Sharjah-Al Dhaid Road," said Shaikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, director general of Sharjah Public Works.
"The road runs through Al Dhaid's city centre, that extends all the way from Al Suhaila Roundabout and up to the Al Dhaid-Madam Road," said Shaikh Khalid.
The new road passes through the eastern and southern areas of Al Dhaid and crosses the Al Dhaid-Madam Road, which is located to the west of Al Dhaid.
The new road was constructed over a length of 8 kilometres at a cost of Dh80 million and took six months to complete.
So far, 95 per cent of the road has already been completed and will open in the next few weeks.
The road was constructed under instructions from His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in order to eliminate trucks from the major thoroughfares of Al Dhaid and Sharjah.
Shaikh Khalid explained that this project is one of the most vital ones to be carried out by the Government of Sharjah. It is aimed at solving traffic problems and enhancing the road network.
Trucks coming from the western area towards Sharjah, which pass through Masafi and Al Dhaid, will be diverted. In addition, trucks travelling towards the western part of the emirate and passing through Al Dhaid Road will also be diverted to the new road.
