Abu Dhabi: The Federal National Council (FNC) on Tuesday voiced concern over the high accident rate caused by heavy vehicles in the northern emirates.
The House raised two questions to Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works, concerning a seven kilometre road linking Ras Al Khaimah to the Al Dara border post with Oman and intersections at Thawban, Siji and Seih Al Mahab.
Khalifa Bin Huwaiden, a member from Sharjah, said the three intersections serve four emirates; Fujairah, Ras Al Kahiamh, Ajman and Sharjah. "These intersections serve around 100 quarries as the new Dubai-Fujairah road is far from these quarries."
He said kilometre-queues of trucks build up on the roads and cause fatal accidents on a daily basis, he suggested bridges be built to help ease the flow of traffic.
Inadequate
RAK officials recently said roads in the emirate have not been able to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles. Colonel Hassan Rashid Al Braiki, RAK traffic department's deputy director, said the increasing number of vehicles registered has resulted in many road accidents.
Colonel Al Braiki said most roads are inadequate for the number of vehicles using them. The House warned because of the situation the rate of accidents in the northern emirates would be on the rise and more lives would be lost.
FNC members said new roads with maximum safety standards should be built. Abdullah Balhen Al Shehi, a RAK member, demanded a road linking Al Geer in RAK to the Al Dara border post with Oman be improved.
Shaikh Hamdan said the Ministry was studying construction of a road for heavy vehicles. He added last year, 22km of the road linking the Al Dara border post was upgraded.
