As Ramadan starts, the UAE Red Crescent Authority has asked people to help the organisation provide aid to those in need.
Announcing its fund-raising drive for the month, an official of the RCA reminded people that Ramadan is a month of fasting and an opportunity to show sympathy for others' suffering.
Maitha Al Shamsi, a spokeswoman for the RCA, said the Al Ain branch has launched another food and fund collection with the help of schools in the city. Students and parents are asked to donate items such as oil, flour, sugar or rice.
Public support
It also spearheaded a fund-raising gathering for families at Al Tawayya Park on Thursday to attract public support for less privileged people.
"The month teaches fasting Muslims to feel and understand the hunger, deprivation and suffering of fellow human beings It urges them to share their wealth or give part of it to the poor so they can also live a decent life," she said.
Al Shamsi said RCA still welcomes donations in the form of money or volunteer work. The food and money collected from donors will be used for the support of orphans and widows.
