Nine villagers blinded after surgery

Reckless government doctors performing cataract operations blinded four people in villages in the Srikakulam district.

The district collector on Friday suspended medical officer M. Chandramouli and ophthalmologist Vasantha Rao, who performed the operations.

The tragedy was exposed after five persons lost their sight at another eye camp held in Nalgonda district.

Officials say the reasons for the debacle could be the surgical instruments were not sterilised or eye drops used were adulterated.
