Mumbai phone numbers get prefix '2'

Expatriates must now to dial prefix '2' to the existing seven-digit subscriber telephone number in Mumbai. The eight-digit number became effective yesterday.

In order to expand the telecom services and meet the growth of the telecom network, the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, is introducing the eight-digit numbering scheme in Mumbai and has allocated a separate level '2' to subscribers.

However there is no change in the numbering plan of the following customer related services:
- All level '1' services, such as Special, Emergency, Internet and Intelligent Network services.
- NSD/ISD station codes (level '0' and '00' calls).
- Calls to adjacent areas with access code '95'.
- All special telephone numbers starting with level '9' and all cellular mobile telephones and paging numbers.
