Dubai: A breast reconstruction surgery has almost transformed the life of Emirati K.B. who told Gulf News, "I finally feel like a woman."
The 30-year-old female patient suffers from scoliosis, a condition in which there is an abnormal curving of the spine resulting in asymmetrical breasts. After years of suffering and shying away from social functions due to her prominent physical abnormality, K.B. can now mingle at parties, wearing a fitted blouse, even an evening gown for the first time. For most of her adolescence and as an adult, this wasn't possible until she met Dr Zahrah Rafaei, a specialist plastic surgeon from Rashid Hospital this month.
"I was devastated with my condition, especially my uneven breasts. I was 17 when I noticed my body structure change. I searched for a qualified lady doctor in both private and government clinics, making countless appointments. However, I failed to find one in Dubai with the expertise in breast reconstruction that my condition needed. Instead, I was referred to doctors in Germany or the US," K.B, a marketing professional in Dubai, said.
Overseas appointment
Frustrated, the Emirati patient sought help outside the country. "I had a surgery appointment in California. However, 10 days before I could travel, I met Dr Zahrah [at Rashid Hospital], referred by three private plastic surgeons. She assured me that she could handle my case. Convinced of her training and expertise, I cancelled my overseas appointment and went ahead with the surgery. The results are amazing. Dr Zahrah has given me a new life, and without her expertise and humane approach, I wouldn't have restored my confidence."
In light of her ordeal, K.B. said that residents who suffer from scoliosis need to know that there is a female doctor in Dubai who specialises in breast reconstructive surgery. "Female patients are shy and feel uncomfortable to meet a male doctor due to cultural and religious aspects. The fact that we have a female doctor right here isn't known."
Dr Zahrah spoke to Gulf News about the case, terming it "challenging". She said, "The patient didn't have much of a trunk on her right side, and her breasts were asymmetrical and misaligned. Her case was not without risks. It was difficult to place her on the operating table because of her abnormally curved spine."
Trained to perform pioneering technique
Dubai: Ten months ago, Dr Zahrah Rafaei returned after completing an 18-month training in oncoplastic surgery for breast reconstruction through the European Academy in Dusseldorf and Milan on behalf of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). She is the only female Emirati doctor with this specialisation.
Oncoplastic surgery combines the latest plastic surgery techniques with breast surgical oncology. It not only removes tumours and cancerous cells but effectively restores a natural appearance to the breast shape as well as the nipple and areola, and creates symmetry of both breasts. Apart from reduced risk of complications, the procedure includes improved cosmetic outcome.
"This is a pioneering technique. Earlier, breast cancer patients would be treated only for cancer, not the reconstruction of breast tissue. With oncoplastic surgery, patients can be treated and still have complete cosmetic construction of the breast, grafted from different body parts," Dr Zahrah said.
