Bid to reduce industrial accidents with new regulations

Abu Dhabi: The number of fire accidents and quantity of environmental and health hazards in the emirate will be drastically reduced soon thanks to regulations in the industrial sector, senior official said on Monday.

The regulatory framework of the code of practice of 'Environment, Health and Safety' (EHS code) for the industrial sector of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, was launched yesterday. The code stipulates standard measures to prevent risks of fires, explosions, work injuries, epidemics, toxic emissions and other incidents that lead to the pollution of the environment.

Compelling report

Considering WAM's report that about 14,000 fire accidents occurred in the UAE during 2002-2007, strict fire safety measures in the EHS code becomes relevant, explained a presentation on the code.

The code was announced at a function held at Abu Dhabi Industrial City under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Higher Corporation for Specialised Economic Zones (ZonesCorp).

Jaber Hareb Al Khaili, the CEO of the ZonesCorp who announced the launching of EHS code said, this code of practice is mandatory and must be applied by all industrial entities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
