Ajman: Keeping one's self abreast with current research in the medical field is critical to medical professionals' careers and practice, a medical practitioner said in an international lecture series called Heroes of Healthcare at the Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman on yesterday.
"Knowledge comes from research. You should be the doctors of today than of the past", Dr Anil D'Cruz, director of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, India, told GMU students during his lecture on cancer.
"A good doctor is one who combines his clinical experience with best external evidence which combines with research. And the right attitude towards a patient is a must to become a successful health care professional," Dr D' Cruz said.
GMU regularly organises the Heroes of Healthcare, an international lecture series where internationally renowned medical experts are invited to deliver talks and interact with the faculty and students at the university.
During the lecture, Dr D'Cruz enumerated the three elements to be a successful doctor — education, research and service — and provided practical pieces of advice for would-be doctors in the audience.
Dr D'Cruz also stressed that out of the ten million cancer cases in the world, two-thirds prevail in the developing world while one-third occur in the developed world.
GMU Founding President Thumbay Moideen, along with the Provost of GMU, Professor Gita Ashok Raj, gave a Heroes of Healthcare Award to Dr D'Cruz in recognition of his invaluable contributions to health care and medicine throughout the world.
