UAE gives $100m aid to Pakistan

President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered $100 million (Dh368 million) in assistance to the people affected by Saturday's earthquake in Pakistan, WAM said yesterday.

In New Delhi, officials said India will fly in relief materials to help Pakistanis.

It will be the first such airlift to its longtime rival since the 1980s. Pakistan has however declined India's offer of helicopters.

"The Indian prime minister today called in our high commissioner and reiterated the offer for the affected people," Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said in Islamabad.

She said Pakistan had ruled out allowing Indian troops into its territory for joint relief work in divided Kashmir.

Islamabad gave a list of relief materials, Indian officials said, confirming that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had met Pakistani ambassador Aziz Ahmad Khan.

"The prime minister has directed that a consignment of relief items be put together urgently and delivered to Pakistan at the earliest," Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran said.

Pakistan said yesterday up to 40,000 people were feared dead in the earthquake.
