Google celebrates the birthday of Arab icon

Dubai: Google is celebrating the birthday of one of the Arab world’s great singing icons.

Legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kalthoum is the latest icon to be turned into a ‘Google doodle’

Visitors to www.google.ae  will be greeted with a drawing of Kawkab Al Sharq (The star of the East) in mid song.

However, Google may find itself rolling out the caricature again this year, as it is not entirely clear when Umm Kalthoum’s actual birthday is.

While most sources put it as May 4, 1904, records from the Egyptian ministry say it was December 31, 1904 while a few say she could have been born in 1898 or 1900.
