Dubai: It was a day that went to the dogs as the 20th annual Pedigree and Whiskas Pet Show opened its doors in Nad Al Sheba.

Animal lovers of all ages crowded the grounds, which was centred around two main display rings.

In the first ring dogs and owners competed for awards in different breed categories, from toy dogs to working dogs to hounds to mixed breeds.

The winner of each group moved on to the best in show competition, which was won by a German shepherd.

And the bow goes to...

After inspecting all of the dogs, judge David Killelea finally stuck the ribbon on Kazi, shown by owner and trainer Nail Al Shamsi. Reserve best in show went to Jenny Gibson and her whippet Lucy.

"Well it's opposite this year," said Gibson, who took top honours last year while Al Shamsi and Kazi were placed second. Al Shamsi said he was pleased with the win.

In addition to the competitions, agility and training displays attracted crowds in a second large ring, the highlight being both Dubai and Abu Dhabi canine units displaying their highly trained animals.

K9 Friends showed some of their dogs that need good homes and Feline Friends hosted a special cat house.
