A German team arrived recently in Sharjah to conduct excavations at a number of archaeological sites. The team is headed by Dr Hans Peter and comprises nine experts in archaeology, anthropology, geology, medicine, engineering and ecology.
They will carry out excavations in cooperation with the local team from the Department of Culture and Information headed by Dr Sabbah Jassem.
Work will be conducted in an area that extends along the Al Bahis Mountain valley. This site, which dates back to 5000 BC, comprises remains of houses, stone and metal artefacts, in addition to a cemetery that accommodated nearly 1,000 skeletons.
The German team will also investigate the area of a dry well, which is believed to have been in use 4,000 years ago.
The excavations will last two months. They will also cover the pre-historic site of Ned Al Thamam, where stone tools dating back to 4 and 5 BC were discovered.
