Sibling duo help to drive Earth Hour awareness
Dubai: Lights out. For many people around the world, that may seem like a command. But, for Dubai-based brother and sister duo, Arohi and Sohum Rajguru, the two words meant something entirely different.
On March 28, the world observed Earth Hour, between 8.30 and 9.30pm. In order to raise awareness about it, the siblings embarked on a journey, over three weeks ago, to spread the word. They distributed 200 leaflets to randomly selected households in Bur Dubai and some offices in the same area. Additionally, they welcomed volunteers to sign a pledge sheet, to confirm that they would observe Earth Hour.
Residents were doubtful whether an hour of electricity conservation could make a difference in the long run.
Twelve-year-old Arohi said: "Some people were interested in volunteering, while others required us to answer some interesting questions. We tried to convince them that this was a display of unity amongst citizens around the globe to focus on the importance of environmental issues on planet Earth."
Some residents were quite encouraging and excited to be a part of the global cause.
Fourteen-year-old Sohum said: "One person who signed up was amusing. He actually stood up in attention and raised his arm to make a solemn pledge to switch off the lights."
The siblings are interested in environmental issues and have participated in activities such as recycling campaigns and clean-up drives. Additionally, they are members of a community called Roots & Shoots, which encourages the youth to make a positive change for the environment.
Sohum said: "Members are asked to form clubs to promote an eco-friendly attitude. My sister and I have started one and are trying to get as many members on board as possible."
