Energy drinks: Costly boost to confidence
As exams approach, many Dubai students admit to increasing their intake of energy drinks. They believe that it enhances their capacity to study for long hours but are unaware of the health risks associated with excessive consumption.
Zaid, 20, an engineering student in a Sharjah University who usually consumes one can of Red Bull a day, steps up his intake by four cans during exams. Zaid says he drinks it so he can perform better. "I'm not sure if it's psychological, but I feel re-energised and refreshed like I am on top of everything."
Sarah, 19, an architecture student, usually drinks two cans of Power Horse a day but increases intake during exam time. "It helps me a lot. I can concentrate more and feel more confident. I drink up to six cans a day if I have exams. It gives me confidence that I will do really well. All my friends do the same."
Mohammad Al Hashemi, 21, a business student, said: "It makes me write faster in exams and keeps me awake. I drink one can of Gatorade a day but during exams I drink up to three cans."

Professors have also noticed an increase in the consumption of energy drinks during exam time. Dr Abdul Qader Daghfous, associate professor at the American University of Sharjah, said, "Several students have been using energy drinks during the exam period. It's the result of massive advertising, which seems to be very effective."
He added: "We need to inform and educate the public about such drinks in a socially responsible way."
Doctor warns
Dr Samia Khalid, a dietician at Al Zahra Hospital in Sharjah, said that energy drinks in general do not have any adverse effect if taken in moderation. However, those with health problems such as diabetes or obesity should avoid consumption. She also said excessive consumption should be avoided. "People should limit their consumption of energy drinks to twice a week; more than that may produce side effects.
"Memory loss, bad temper, being on the edge and lack of concentration are common effects," she said.
