Abu Dhabi: A trolley bag lying in the middle of the major thoroughfare triggered a massive traffic jam on the busy Electra Street in Abu Dhabi on Thursday afternoon.

Traffic was blocked as police removed the bag from the street and carried it in their vehicle.

The incident happened at around 2:30 pm in front of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank headquarters on Electra Street.

It was not immediately known what was inside the bag and how it landed on the road.

An onlooker at the scene said the police first scanned the bag for any suspected items and moved it to a side before opening it.

“I don’t think they found anything suspicious inside. They took the bag in their car,” he said.

Motorists were left stranded as the search was in progress. Police cordoned off the area and blocked the traffic from all sides to carry out the operation. The road was re-opened to traffic at around 3:30 pm.

Police could not be immediatley reached for comment.
