A draft law on pre-nuptial medical tests has been submitted to the Technical Legislation Committee at the Ministry of Justice.

The draft law was submitted by a committee comprising representatives from the ministries of Health and Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf, Emirates Thalassemia Society, and the Marriage Fund.

The upcoming law will be imposed on couples contemplating marriage in order to curb the rate of hereditary diseases, such as thalassemia, AIDS, hepatitis, sickle cell anaemia and malt intolerance.

The new law will detail the procedures that should be followed in case any hereditary diseases are discovered in the pre-nuptial medical tests.
