Dhaka to extradite ’killer’ to Kuwait
In a move that is certain to ease a labour ban on the recruitment of Bangladeshis in the Gulf state of Kuwait, Bangladesh has agreed to hand over a Bangladeshi national to Kuwait for allegedly killing a Kuwaiti in that country.
Billal who is wanted for his crime, is now under arrest in Dhaka.
Kuwait slapped a total ban on the recruitment of any more Bangladeshi manpower in 1999, apparently after the Bangladeshi labourer strangled his 90-year-old Kuwaiti employer, stole his money and fled back home.
Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad said, the government had decided to hand Billal over to Kuwait for trial.
Officials claim the accused went to Kuwait illegally to find a job and fled to Bangladesh after killing a Kuwaiti.
Asked why the government would hand over a Bangladeshi national to Kuwait, the Foreign Minister said that Bangladesh was always in favour of handing over offenders and fugitives.
He said one of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's killers had earlier been handed over to Bangladesh and the government also wanted to hand over people accused of offences in other countries as quickly as possible.
The Law and Home Ministries, he said, had worked on the process neeeded for this.
Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda who was convicted in the Sheikh Mujib Murder Case, was extradited to Bangladesh from Thailand in 1998.
