Dubai: A visitor has been jailed for six months after a surveillance camera caught him stealing D450,000 from his workplace.
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 25-year-old Indian suspect of theft after a surveillance camera installed at the company caught him coming out of an elevator with the stolen money in an envelope.
The accused, A.K., pleaded guilty.
The court also fined A.K.'s 27-year-old driver and compatriot, M.A., Dh5,000 for being in possession of some the stolen money.
M.A. pleaded not guilty.
Deportation order
A.K. will be deported after serving his jail sentence, according to the primary verdict, which is still subject to appeal.
The company's 35-year-old Pakistani supervisor testified that, after his manager asked him to withdraw the money from the bank, he had kept the cash in his laptop sleeve under his desk.
"We wanted to wire the money to Holland. The secretary told me A.K. left the company. Later, I discovered that the money was missing. A.K.'s mobile phone was switched off when I phoned him," he told the court.
