Two suicides in two weeks at Dubai Central jail

Dubai: A prisoner serving a life sentence committed suicide at Dubai Central jail on Wednesday, a police source told Gulf News.

The source said that the prisoner who died did not possess any legal identity documents and had hanged himself inside a solitary confinement cell in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to police, the deceased, M.A.A., was in his early 30s.

The source said it was the second suicide at Dubai Central Jail in less than two weeks. A 20-year-old Emirati prisoner identified as S.S.A. had hanged himself on the last day of Ramadan.

"He used his own cloths to hang himself," police said of the first suicide.

Police said the prisoner who had been held at Dubai Central Jail for almost three years after being handed a life sentence by a Dubai court which found him guilty of murder and robbery.

"M.A.A. killed an Indian man three years ago," police said.

Solitary cell shock

Police said M.A.A committed suicide on the very day he was locked up in a solitary confinement cell.

"He was sent to the solitary confinement after being caught by police threading the face of another inmate inside the cell," police said.

Police said that M.A.A. removed a thread from his blanket apparently offering to help another prisoner trim his facial hair.

"He was seen by police on the CCTV cameras in the jail, who took him immediately to the solidarity confinement," the source said.

Police said that M.A.A. ended his life just a few hours after being sent to the solitary cell.

M.A.A is married and has one child.

"He is originally Iranian but he is stateless here in Dubai," another inmate told Gulf News.

The inmate said it was not uncommon for prisoners to use threads to remove extra hair.

The prisoner said that other inmates came to know about the death of M.A.A. only on Thursday because he died early on Wednesday when most prisoners would be asleep.

The prisoner said M.A.A. had been bringing a mental illness medication into the jail for three months.
